The Fellow Espresso WDT Tool is a precision distribution tool for the controlled and even preparation of your coffee puck. With its fine, angled metal needles, freshly ground coffee is gently loosened and evenly distributed in the portafilter before tamping.

The so-called Weiss Distribution Technique (WDT) helps break up clumps in the grounds and balance out areas of uneven density. This reduces the risk of channeling – preventing water from easily finding preferential paths through the coffee puck during extraction. The result is a solid foundation for reproducible and consistent espresso shots.

The integrated slide-open mechanism is particularly well-thought-out: simply slide open the housing to expose the fine needles for use. After you're finished, they can be fully retracted into the housing. This protects the delicate needles between uses and allows the tool to be stored neatly at your coffee station.

Application

Slide open the housing until the needles are fully exposed. Then, carefully move the needles through the ground coffee in your portafilter to break up clumps until the grounds are as evenly distributed as possible. Follow by tamping as usual.

After use, retract the needles completely into the housing. Since these are very fine precision needles, they should be handled with care to prevent bending.

Cleaning & Care

The Fellow Espresso WDT Tool is not dishwasher safe. Fellow recommends cleaning by hand with soap and a soft sponge. The needles should be cleaned with extra care.

For a more thorough cleaning, the tool can be disassembled occasionally. Allow all components to dry completely before reassembling. Damaged or bent needles can be replaced with replacement needles.
