Pour-over vs. Full Immersion

Most coffee makers can be divided into two categories based on their functionality: pour-over and full immersion. The pour-over method uses a coffee filter for preparation. This category includes filter coffee machines, hand filters, and Chemex carafes. Here, the coffee is prepared using a paper filter. A major advantage of the manual pour-over method with a hand filter is that you can control the speed and distribution of the water. Furthermore, with the rightKettleChoose the perfect brewing temperature. Pour-over coffee is milder and less acidic.

The full immersion brewing method, on the other hand, is primarily found with a French press. With this brewing method, the coffee grounds are mixed directly with water and then pressed towards the grounds using a plunger. Therefore, you should choose a coarser grind for this brewing method than for the pour-over brewing method. Because there is no paper filter, more oils and bitter compounds are absorbed into the coffee during brewing, making the coffee from the French press more intense. The AeroPress, on the other hand, contains elements of both brewing methods, as the coffee-water mixture is forced through a paper filter into the cup under pressure. No matter which brewing method you choose, aromatic coffee enjoyment is guaranteed with a coffee maker. Discover our wide selection and choose your favorite.

Questions & Answers

How do you make coffee in a coffee maker?

It all depends on the product you choose. If you use a Chemex or a hand filter, for example, you'll be preparing your filter coffee using the pour-over method. This means you place a suitable filter into your maker and fill it with coffee grounds. Then, you pour hot water over the filter, and the coffee begins to drip into your collecting container, such as a cup or coffee pot.
However, if you use a French press, better known as a coffee press, you don't need coffee filters. With this brewing method, you pour the ground coffee beans directly into the pot and pour over hot water. After a short rest, place the plunger on the pot and slowly press down to force the ground coffee toward the bottom. Therefore, you should grind your coffee medium to coarse with this brewing method.
The AeroPress, on the other hand, works similarly to a French Press, but requires a paper coffee filter. This filter is used to filter the coffee-water mixture at the end of the brewing process. This gives you complete control during preparation!

How long do you have to brew coffee in the coffee maker?

This depends entirely on your chosen brewing method. With a French press, the brewing time is typically 3 to 6 minutes. With an AeroPress, the brewing time after stirring is 1 to 2 minutes, depending on the desired strength. Pour-over brewing methods, on the other hand, do not require any brewing time. Here, you simply wait for the coffee to bloom after the first brew before adding more water. If you use a medium grind, the brewing process should take about 3 to 4 minutes.

What should I look for when buying a coffee maker?

First and foremost, you should consider what you want to use a coffee maker for before buying it. While a hand filter and a French press are only suitable for filter coffee, the AeroPress is a true all-rounder that you can also use to make espresso or cold brew. Another point to bear in mind when buying is that coffee tastes different from different makers. For mild coffee, you should choose a hand filter or a Chemex carafe, while for stronger coffee, a French press is better. Coffee makers also have different capacities. They often come in different sizes so you can choose the right size for your needs. If you also want to use the coffee maker while traveling, we recommend choosing a model that doesn't take up much space in your luggage and is particularly robust. In addition to makers for filter coffee, you will also find practical espresso machines for enjoying fresh espresso on the go in our range.
