coffee filter

For many brewing methods, in addition to good coffee like our CAPTN Coffee, the coffee filter is essential. Paper coffee filters come in various sizes and are suitable for a wide range of coffee makers. They are made from thin filter paper and prevent grounds from getting into your coffee. A good paper filter is characterized by its perfect fit for your coffee maker and its fine-pored, neutral-tasting paper. This is the only way to allow your coffee’s aroma to fully develop so you can enjoy the full coffee flavor. Discover the right paper filters for your brewing method in our selection.

Filter aus Papier mit Wasserausguss aus Kessel in ein Glas

High-quality paper coffee filters

As early as the beginning of the 20th century, there were already a few coffee houses in Europe, but there were no practical paper coffee filters. Melitta Bentz came up with the idea when she wanted to make coffee at home. Back then, coffee was filtered through a sieve or hot water was poured over the coffee and the coffee grounds were allowed to settle to the bottom. Neither of these methods was ideal, as there was always coffee grounds in the cup.
Melitta Bentz of Dresden experimented with a perforated brass cup and used a blotting paper from her son's notebook as a filter. Thus, the idea for the paper filter was born and revolutionized coffee preparation. Over the years, the now typical conical shape of coffee filters evolved.
Today, there are a wide variety of paper filters from various manufacturers on the market. A good coffee filter consists of fine-pored, flavor-neutral paper made from various materials, allowing the aroma of your coffee beans to fully develop.

Questions & Answers

What size coffee filter?

Coffee filters come in different sizes. This depends on the number of cups of coffee you want to brew. Common sizes include size 1 for 1 to 2 cups, size 2 for 1 to 4 cups, and size 4 for 8 to 10 cups. The right filter size depends not only on the number of cups, but also on the type of coffee maker. Coffee filters for different coffee makers, such as the hand filter, Aeropress, traditional coffee maker, or Chemex, vary. For the Aeropress and Chemex, as well as for some coffee makers, you need special, custom-fit filters from the manufacturer.

How do I prepare a good filter coffee?

The best filter coffee is still prepared by hand. We recommend grinding your coffee beans with a coffee grinder immediately before brewing. Then place the ground coffee into a coffee maker equipped with filter paper. These are available in various materials such as ceramic, plastic, or copper. Then simply pour hot water over the coffee grounds and wait until your coffee begins to expand. This method is also called blooming. Then continue adding water in a circular motion. With a medium grind, your coffee should be ready in 3 to 4 minutes. Our tip: To achieve the optimal coffee-to-water ratio, you should use a precision scale.

What is the difference between a bleached and unbleached paper filter?

Not all paper filters are created equal: In addition to the paper type, there is another distinguishing feature: the color. The difference is that a white paper filter has been bleached using oxygen, while brown filters are unbleached. But is there a difference in taste? That's something everyone can decide for themselves. Whether the filter is bleached or unbleached shouldn't make a big difference in taste. This is probably why many manufacturers offer both versions.
